As we work together to strengthen this important field, we’re proud to showcase the progress and achievements of our partners from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and Finland.
Estonian Partners:
Institute of Bioengineering at the University of Tartu
The recent establishment of the Institute of Bioengineering at the University of Tartu marks a significant advancement in the bioengineering sector. With research groups led by prominent scientists in areas such as synthetic biology, virology, plant physiology, and gas fermentation, the institute is poised to become a key player in biotechnological innovation. Their focus on high-quality research and attracting top scientific talent will undoubtedly place Tartu on the map as a center for biotech excellence.

As part of the University of Tartu, the Estonian Centre for Biosustainability (ECB) is Estonia’s leader in developing bioprocesses and innovative synthetic biology solutions to address global challenges in biosustainability. ECB excels in both fundamental and applied research, driving advancements that contribute to a sustainable future.

Finnish Partner – Synbio Powerlabs
Synbio Powerlabs is driving the DNA-Economy with their state-of-the-art facilities, including Europe’s largest pilot facility. Their mission is to bridge the gap between lab-scale experiments and large-scale industrial applications, enabling disruptive biotechnologies to reach their full potential. Supported by substantial funding, Synbio Powerlabs is preparing for a major pilot launch in 2024, featuring a versatile lineup of reactors and cutting-edge equipment.
Key Highlights:
- Pilot facility equipped with reactors ranging from 15L to 27,000L.
- Supported by a €3M grant from Business Finland and €6.6M in initial funding.
Latvian Partners:
Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis (LIOS)
LIOS is at the forefront of cardiovascular research and has made significant progress in developing treatments for cancer, infectious diseases, and central nervous system disorders. Their impressive achievements include the introduction of 18 original medicines and over 100 generic medicines. LIOS’s expertise in drug discovery, organic synthesis, and computational modeling underscores their leadership in advancing medical science.

- 70 papers published annually.
- Leading research institution in Latvia with global impact.
Biocatalyst Foundation
As a distinguished private non-profit organization, the Biocatalyst Foundation plays an essential role in enhancing the biotechnology innovation ecosystem across the Baltics and Europe. Their ambitious vision is to elevate the Baltic region into one of Europe’s top three biotechnology clusters. By focusing on talent development, startup support, and ecosystem building, they are driving the region toward becoming a global leader in biotechnology.
Key Highlights:
- Launch of a Venture Studio to support biotech startups.
- Establishment of the European Biotech Mentor Network by SYNBEE, aimed at providing support to startups and aspiring founders..
Lithuanian Partners:
Life Sciences Center at Vilnius University
Renowned for its advanced research facilities and international collaborations, the Life Sciences Center at Vilnius University is a hub for innovation in biochemistry, biotechnology, and biosciences. With over 1,000 bachelor and master students and 173 PhD scholars, the center is a cornerstone of life sciences education and research in the region. Their involvement in the iGEM competition, where they secured 2nd place in 2023, highlights their commitment to excellence.

- Active involvement in European research initiatives, including the Arqus European University Alliance.
Association LithuaniaBIO:
Association LithuaniaBIO is a non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting the wider application of life sciences and biotechnology as tools to address global environmental, health, and overall quality of life challenges. By representing a diverse group of companies, research institutions, educational institutions, and healthcare providers, LithuaniaBIO plays a key role in driving innovation and economic growth in Lithuania.

- Focuses on bioeconomy, medical technologies, and life sciences as top priority areas for research and innovation.
- Active involvement in European research initiatives, including the Arqus European University Alliance.
Project Progress: Baltic Life Sciences Ecosystem Analysis
As part of our ongoing efforts to understand and strengthen the biotechnology landscape, BIOCONNECT has conducted around 50 interviews with key stakeholders across the Baltic life sciences ecosystem. These insights are essential in shaping our strategic initiatives, and it’s not too late for you to engage in this process as well. Currently, the consortium is putting together an action plan to guide the next steps.
